FAIRFIELD, NJ - The Gramon Family of Schools, a program serving students ages 3-21 on the autism spectrum and other developmental disabilities, is proud to acknowledge our Kindness Club as winners of the Community Food Bank of New Jersey’s annual food drive. The students and staff donated a total amount of 1,440 pounds of food to help members of our community in need.
The Kindness Club facilitated a food collection as a project-based learning opportunity to address important vocational, social and academic skills while fostering kindness by seeing their end product go towards a good cause.
Keira Meli and Joseph Reigal, the coordinators of the Kindness Club, are excited to accompany the students in a celebration on Thursday, April 4, 2019, where the Food Bank will present the staff and students with a trophy for their contribution.
“We started the Kindness Club to create a culture of generosity and respect. Through our instructional activities, we have been able to connect with our community and create and maintain a positive atmosphere amongst the staff and students. The Kindness Club aims to provide rich and meaningful learning experiences that establish the continuity of compassion and respect for others”, claims Joseph.
The Gramon Family of Schools is extremely proud of the enthusiasm and progress they see in their students when they participate in these project-based learning activities. Director of the Gramon Family of Schools Candace Galvez states, “Our students attend our schools from over 60 surrounding school districts, so it is a truly great feeling when we can come together to help others in the greater community”.
The Gramon Family of Schools was created in 1939 by Ruth K. Newman, an educator, and parent of a neurologically impaired child. Newman believed that only by pursuing an individualized program based on each child’s strengths and weaknesses, could she truly help them achieve the best of their potential. Today the Gramon Family of Schools consists of three schools; Glenview Academy, Gramon School, and New Beginnings, and has been carrying on that legacy ever since.
