Through our supportive environments, collaborative relationships, and implementation of best practices The Gramon Family of Schools prepares our students for their lifelong journeys. With great anticipation, The Gramon Family of Schools celebrated the start of a brand new journey when they were awarded the New Jersey landscapers Service Project Award in the Spring of 2020. A variety of local companies in the Green Industry donated their talents, materials, and services to renovate the GFS field. This included the installation of a paver patio which is utilized as an outdoor classroom area, as well as the installation of a greenhouse which enhances our Culinary Arts Program.

In preparation for our greenhouse, our students worked diligently in our school’s seed room to germinate a garden full of vegetables and flowers to put in the greenhouse. When the greenhouse was completed in March 2021, our students worked to maintain the seedlings in the greenhouse until they were big enough to transplant to our raised garden beds.  Once the veggies were nestled in their new home in the GFS Garden, the students continued to weed, fertilize, and patiently wait to enjoy the fruits of their labors.

During our ESY program, the students worked in the garden and ran a pop-up Farm Stand where staff could come and select a variety of vegetables, an assortment of lettuces, and fresh herbs to take home and enjoy. Along with the farm stand, vegetables were brought to our Culinary Chef to create a variety of dishes for our students to prepare for staff to purchase during pop-up lunch sales.

The GFS Garden and greenhouse have been a vital tool for our students. We all live at such a fast pace and the garden gave our students an opportunity to slow down and enjoy things that are taken for granted each day. We choose to follow the advice of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Adopt the pace of nature, her secret is patience.”
